Chapter 14: Job Interview and Press Conference

Yun Duo felt that she was pretty much headed toward becoming a part-time mentoring tutor. Besides helping Tang Yi-Bai with his level 4 exam, she also had to help Lin Zi prepare for the written test and interview for his job application. Lin Zi's resume was very interesting. In order to avoid unnecessary concern from the interviewer with regards to his work experience, he simply left those out. For the column where he was supposed to list his work experience, he only put down 'freelancer' without providing any further explanation. This simple word exuded the information-laden aura of 'shameless youth with an overinflated sense of self unwilling to do lowbrow work living off the moonlight years of his elders'. And then, in the column for self-evaluation, he even more shamelessly beautified himself according to the code of conduct set out by the newspaper agency for its reporters. He made it sound like he was born to be a reporter — that anyone who stood in his w

Chapter 13: Level 4 Tutoring Group

When Tang Yi-Bai smiled at the camera, Yun Duo's gaze would always shift a little to avoid looking at it straight on. After taking a good shot, he returned the handphone to her. Yun Duo bowed her head and accepted it, saying, "That ... you still have classes, right? I'll be going then ..." and she moved to get up. "Wait a moment, Yun Duo," Tang Yi-Bai gently pressed down on her arm. He did not put much force behind it, but Yun Duo could not get up. He pursed his lips briefly, then said, "I want to ask you a question." "What?" "How much did you score for your level 4 English exam?" "652 marks." Tang Yi-Bai's jaw dropped, as if stunned by this number. His pretty eyes sparkled with a special light. "You're amazing." "Cough cough," Yun Duo was rather flustered being praised by Tang Yi-Bai, "What's with that? Each industry just has its own strengths. My swimming is definite

After the editorial department ended their regular meeting, Yun Duo was notified that only one of her two manuscripts had been approved for publishing. The one that had been kicked back was the one on Tang Yi-Bai. "Why?" Yun Duo was very surprised. "Because there isn't any news value," the other party replied. Such a cursory explanation left Yun Duo feeling even more troubled. How could Tang Yi-Bai have no news value? Could it be that she had taken the wrong approach in writing the article? She wasn't thick-skinned enough to continue pestering the other for details, and when she asked Cheng Mei, Cheng Mei was unable to make things any clearer either. So, Yun Duo could only carry these dark and dejected feelings with her as she waited for the return of Teacher Sun. In the late afternoon right before work let out, Teacher Sun returned to the agency to retrieve some things, only to see Yun Duo sitting at his work station, her face scrunched up like a

Chapter 11: Ideals and Pursuits

Yun Duo produced two manuscripts from the things she experienced at the Sports University. The first manuscript was the report on the National Sports Employees Communications Exchange, while the second was an introductory piece on Tang Yi-Bai. The length of the second manuscript was ... 3 times that of the first manuscript. She had maintained an objective and fair approach in writing the article, but the end result was like a brain-dead diehard fan gushing over their idol. Yun Duo was rather resigned about it. Tang Yi-Bai was not perfect — for instance, his habit of 'teasing reporters' just could not be helped — but she could not write about those things. She had depicted Tang Yi-Bai as a 'top scholar among athletes'. Even after removing the qualifier field of 'swimming', when taking the entire professional sports circle into consideration, Tang Yi-Bai was still deserving of the title of 'top scholar', without question. An athlete who did not skip
